MOVISTAR YAMAHA CONTINUE DEVELOPMENT ON DAMP SEPANG TRACK

Movistar Yamaha MotoGP riders Maverick Viñales and Valentino Rossi carried out their testing programme in a positive fashion today. Movistar Yamaha MotoGP‘s Maverick Viñales and Valentino Rossi were back in action today at the Sepang International Circuit for the second of the three track days that mark the start of 2017 MotoGP racing activity. They continued to work through a number of different testing materials, taking second and fourth place respectively in today‘s time sheets.

The riders had to be patient at the start of the eight-hour session. Damp track conditions made for a four-hour wait before they could put their 2017 YZR-M1s to the test.

Once the track had dried sufficiently, Viñales was keen to head out and continued his hunt for the perfect set-up. He soon found a good rhythm and he comfortably began to chip away at his time. After one and a half hours he posted a best lap of 2‘00.646s to temporarily take over the top of the standings before the pace of the other riders picked up.

In the meantime, the young Spaniard proceeded to test the new fairing in order to be able to compare data with his teammate, but couldn‘t resist to push on his final stint. Viñales was one of only two riders to drop under the 2‘00 mark with, a 1‘59.858s and ended the day in second place, 0.406s from the front.

Rossi was also eager to work on the bike set-up to improve performance and left pit lane as soon as the circuit was dry. As one of the first riders to venture out on track, he put in 54 laps, which he used to compare the new fairing to the old version.

With his physical condition improved from yesterday, he underlined that he was back on form by being one of the few riders to improve on his best time of the day before. At the very end of the session he put in a time attack to move up to fourth place in today‘s standings, with a fastest lap of 2‘00.254s, 0.802s from first.

MASSIMO MEREGALLITEAM DIRECTOR

“Though we started late today, the test is proceeding well. We‘ve only been unlucky that we couldn‘t start early this morning. We had quite a lot of items on the programme for today and due to the delays we haven‘t been able to complete all of them. Valentino and Maverick put in a lot of effort to make the most of the dry track time. They both tested and compared the new fairing and new frame. We also made time to look further into improving rear tyre life, with positive results. So far the feedback from the riders has been good, so we are confident about the material that we are testing. Hopefully we will be able to start at 10 o‘clock tomorrow to continue our development and complete quite a full-on schedule, as we also have to try a new tyre for Michelin.”

MAVERICK VIÑALES

“Today was good and I‘m so happy because we worked on our race pace and finally at the end, on the race tyre. I tried to do consistent laps, and honestly the lap times were quite fast. I‘m surprised that the bike has been working so good and, as the grip increased, we improved each time we went out. As I said, we are focusing on riding on a used tyre so I‘m quite happy with second place. It‘s nice to focus on one lap and be fast, but we have to be fast on all twenty laps and I think we did a good job and made a good start. I don‘t know if I will do a time attack tomorrow, it will depend on the weather and the condition of the track. You always want to see your name at the top of the list, but sometimes it‘s more useful to work towards the races.”

VALENTINO ROSSI

“I‘m feeling 100% fit again. Yesterday when I went to sleep I still had a headache, but today when I woke up I felt better so I was able to put in some good work and at the end it was a good day. This morning we lost a lot of time waiting for the conditions to improve, but in the afternoon I could do more than 50 laps. We had some important stuff to try and more or less everything was positive. My pace was quite good and at the end I did a time attack and I‘m in fourth position, so top five is OK. We have a different frame and it was good, I like it. We haven‘t decided yet, but the first impression was positive.”

Rossi and Vinales Visit the Phillippines

ROSSI AND VIÑALES DELIGHT FANS IN THE PHILIPPINES

Movistar Yamaha MotoGP Team‘s Valentino Rossi and Maverick Viñales continued their ’media tour‘ with a short but rewarding stop-over in the Philippines. Despite the shortness of the visit the riders were determined to make the most of their time. They met up with the media and Yamaha dealers and also found time in between to entertain their fans in a special race activity.

Manila (Philippines), 28th January 2017

Just a few days after their visit to Indonesia, Movistar Yamaha MotoGP riders Valentino Rossi and Maverick Viñales reunited in Quezon City, near Manila, for a dealer event and a special outdoor racing activity, the ‘Yamaha GP’, organised by Yamaha Motor Philippines Inc. (YMPH).

The teammates were enthusiastically greeted by the Filipino fans upon arrival at Manila Airport on January 27th. The locals were excited to welcome back Rossi, who visited the Philippines before in 2014, and keen on giving Viñales an unforgettable taste of all their country has to offer, as it was his first time visiting.

The riders started the next day with a press conference at the Robinsons Novaliches Trade Hall together with Yamaha Motor Company’s General Manager Motorsports Division, Kouichi Tsuji, and President of Yamaha Motor Philippines, Inc., Toru Osugi. This was followed by a photoshoot and then it was time for action. Eager to take part in the ’Yamaha GP‘, the riders headed outside in their leathers where two Yamaha SNIPER 150 MXi stood waiting. Rossi and Viñales entertained the crowd by doing a few laps on a small ’track‘ created in the parking lot and were joined by YMPH‘s riders afterwards for a group photo.

After lunch the pair took time to talk to the media before they had to pack their bags for the Sepang MotoGP Official Test, to be held from January 30th – February 1st. This test will be the first occasion for Rossi and Viñales to ride the 2017 Yamaha YZR-M1 in its new colours as they prepare for the coming season.

KOUICHI TSUJIGENERAL MANAGER MOTORSPORTS DIVISION, YMC

“This stop in the Philippines, though short, was certainly meaningful, because we want to show that the Movistar Yamaha MotoGP Team and its riders value the passionate support of the fans. Experiencing the country‘s culture and being able to communicate face-to-face with its press and the fans plays a big part in understanding Yamaha‘s philosophy of Kando* and the ’human approach‘ that we hold so dear in our company. It was enjoyable for all to see the riders having fun on the Yamaha SNIPER 150 MXi and now that Rossi and Viñales have ’warmed their muscles‘ and felt the support of the fans, we can focus on the task ahead and fly to the test in Sepang with maximum motivation.”

VALENTINO ROSSI

“This was my second time visiting the Philippines and I‘m even more impressed by the country, the culture and the atmosphere than the first time. The people are all very friendly so I enjoyed my stay here a lot. It was nice to meet the Filipino press and the fans again and put on a little show for them, riding the Yamaha SNIPER 150 MXi. It‘s not as big as my M1, but it‘s fast. Though we couldn‘t do a proper race, Maverick and I did a couple of laps with the fans watching and we had fun, but now it‘s time for serious work again. We will soon fly to Malaysia for the test in Sepang and start the season.”

MAVERICK VIÑALES

“This was a new experience for me, I had never visited the Philippines before, so I‘m very happy that I‘ve had the chance now to get a quick first impression of the country. The people here are so friendly and they really put in an effort to make us feel welcome. The crowds at the “Yamaha GP” event were cheering very loudly during the press conference and it‘s great to see how passionate they are about motorsports. I also had a lot of fun on track today with Valentino, riding a Yamaha SNIPER 150 MXi. I enjoyed my time in Manila a lot so it‘s a shame that we have to leave already after just 24 hours, but I‘m also looking forward to riding my YZR-M1 again in Sepang in just a few days‘ time.”

KTM Factory Racing Team Achieves Double-Podium at Phoenix SX

Red Bull KTM Factory Racing Team Maintains Championship Points Lead With a Double-Podium at Phoenix SX

Round 4 – AMA Supercross Championship – January 29, 2017

KTM_AMA

PHOENIX – Red Bull KTM Factory Racing Team’s Ryan Dungey kept his podium streak alive on Saturday as he rode to a solid 3rd place finish at Round 4 of the 2017 AMA Supercross Championship in Phoenix. Troy Lee Designs/Red Bull/KTM’s Shane McElrath bounced back from a visit to the Last Chance Qualifier (LCQ) to capture a 2nd place finish in the 250SX West division. Both Dungey and McElrath maintain the championship points lead in their respective classes after four rounds of racing.

In 450SX Heat 1, Marvin Musquin put his Red Bull KTM 450 SX-F FACTORY EDITION into a top five position off the start where he pushed his way into the top three by the third lap. After an all-out battle with Cooper Webb, Musquin was able to make his podium position stick as he cleanly transferred to the Main Event.

Dungey lined up in 450SX Heat 2, where he powered his Red Bull KTM 450 SX-F FACTORY EDITION into 5th place off the start. Dungey made his move into 4th around the halfway point of the six-lap heat race as he finished strong to capture a transfer position into the Main Event.

450SX Main Event
The Main Event was full of action as the top five riders battled it out for a podium position all race long. Dungey began just inside the top five as he rounded the opening lap in the 4th place position, with Rocky Mountain ATV*MC/WPS/KTM’s Davi Millsaps in 5th. Dungey eventually caught the battle for 2nd where he made the pass on Justin Brayton to inherit 3rd. From there, Dungey set his sights on catching Cole Seely for the 2nd place position.

Dungey eventually made his move around Seely just after the halfway point and the duo battled back and forth throughout the next few sections of the track. However, a hard-charging Chad Reed blazed past both riders through the rhythm section leaving Dungey to fall back into the 3rd place position once again.

Despite every effort to catch the leaders, Dungey wasn’t able to make up enough time to catch Reed for the 2nd place position. With a steady string of podium finishes through the first four rounds, Dungey maintains the 450SX championship points leader by a 15-point margin over his teammate Musquin.

Dungey: “After I got up to 3rd I set my sights on trying to make the pass on Seely and then I was able to, which was good. In the sand he came back and took the position back and then we go into the next corner and Seely slid so I was boxed in down that whole rhythm and there came Chad – he was riding good. Once Chad got by I tried to tow in behind him – I knew I was losing a lot of time in that one rhythm lane but overall just trying to tow in with him. I really wanted to make a late charge at the end but I wasn’t able to, those guys were riding good tonight.”

Musquin didn’t get a favorable start in the Main Event as he came around for the opening lap in 13th place. Musquin continued to push throughout the 20-lap race where he ultimately climbed back to an 8th place finish for the day.

After four rounds, Musquin sits only 15 points back for 2nd place position in the 450SX championship point standings.

250SX West Main Event
McElrath was able to lead 11 of the 16 Main Event laps aboard his KTM 250 SX-F FACTORY EDITION. McElrath put himself into a favorable position from the beginning as he remained inside the top three at all times. While battling for the lead position late in the race, McElrath chose to maintain his composure and capture the 2nd place position where he remains in command of the 250SX West points lead after four rounds of racing.

McElrath: “We overcame a lot of adversity today. I had been riding a little cautious and wanted to have that fire again. That race should have been mine, but you do need to be careful when you come up on lappers and aren’t sure what they are going to do. I’m thankful we’re safe after going down in the heat race.”

Harley-Davidson Factory Team primed for Flat Track battle
Team of Coolbeth, Johnson and Robinson revealed live during ESPN X Games

HDFlatTrack

MILWAUKEE (January 28, 2017) – It’s a flat track triple threat. The Harley-Davidson® Factory Flat Track Racing Team will unleash a three-rider squad in 2017. Former AMA Pro Grand National champions Kenny Coolbeth Jr. and Jake Johnson and young flat track star Brandon Robinson will race in the legendary Factory Team leathers.

The team was announced today during a live interview with Coolbeth, Johnson and Robinson during ABC network coverage of ESPN’s X Games Aspen.

Gunning for the checkered flag aboard the fierce Harley-Davidson XG750R competition motorcycle, the formidable trio of ace racers will chase a championship on the American Flat Track (AFT) series and fight to medal in the Harley-Davidson Flat Track Racing event at ESPN’s X Games Minneapolis. The American Flat Track racing season opens during Daytona Bike Week at the March 16 DAYTONA TT on a new circuit featuring a jump to be constructed inside Daytona International Speedway in Daytona Beach, Fla.

“This edition of the Harley Factory Team will bring unmatched savvy and experience to the track,” said Harley-Davidson Vice President and Managing Director U.S. Mike Kennedy. “With a combined 59 Grand National wins and five AMA Pro Grand National championships, this line-up of riders knows what it takes to do battle with the lead pack and will be a force aboard our new Harley-Davidson XG750R Factory Racing bikes. If you are in Daytona for Bike Week, ride to the race and see the Factory Team in action on this exciting new TT track.”

The Harley Factory Team will field a fleet of Harley XG750R bikes for Coolbeth, Johnson and Robinson. With a custom chassis purpose-built for flat track racing, the XG750R flat tracker is powered by a race-modified, liquid-cooled, fuel-injected 750cc Revolution X™ V-Twin engine originally engineered for the Harley-Davidson Street® 750, a motorcycle designed for maximum urban maneuverability with rebellious Dark Custom™ attitude. The Revolution X engine is assembled at Harley-Davidson Vehicle and Powertrain Operations in Kansas City, Missouri.

“I’m excited to be one of the riders helping to push the XG750R to the front of the field,” said Robinson. “I’m sure I’ll be battling with Kenny and Jake to see who can make history and score the first win aboard the new bike. I’ve learned a lot racing against them. Now we’re working together to bring home a championship for Harley-Davidson.”

The race-modified Revolution X engine and a racing frame for the XG750R were developed in collaboration with Vance & Hines Motorsports. The XG750R flat tracker motorcycle is not a production model. The 750cc XG Revolution X V-Twin engine is for sale through Harley-Davidson dealers today and can be modified for racing use by aspiring dealers and privateers.

More About The New BMW K 1600 B

Largely based on the technology used in the BMW 6-cylinder tourer K 1600 GT, the new K 1600 B features a spectacular backward sloping linear design with a completely reconstructed rear section. This not only makes the bagger look particularly low-lying and slender, but also, thanks to the new rear frame, significantly reduces the height of the passenger seat.

As with the K 1600 GT, the Bagger’s 1,632 cc in-line six-cylinder engine reaches 160 hp and 129 lb-ft of torque. The bike comes standard with three riding modes (Rain, Road, and Dynamic), Dynamic Traction Control, and Dynamic ESA with “Road” and “Cruise” damping modes. Shift Assist Pro, reverse assist, hill start control, adaptive turning lights and more, are all available as an option. But, like all other BMWs, buyers can enhance the K 1600 B with BMW-specific packages that include:

  • Safety package: Adaptive turning light, daytime running light, tire pressure control TPC, and Hill Start Control
  • Comfort package: Shift Assistant Pro, central locking, alarm system DWA, Keyless Ride, and LED additional headlight

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Jan. 26, 2017) – Ryan Wells and the BriggsAuto.com race team have joined forces for the 2017 American Flat Track race season. The 2016 GNC2 Champion will debut the No. 94 Kawasaki Ninja 650 in the AFT Twins class at the DAYTONA TT on March 16, 2017.

GNC2 was American Flat Track’s breeding ground for up-and-coming riders and the class, now known as AFT Singles, has been re-envisioned for 2017 as a racing platform for 450cc single-cylinder motorcycles. Wells dominated the division in 2016, earning 264 points and five wins. The Albion, N.Y. native looks to carry his momentum into 2017 with a new team led by legendary tuner Johnny Goad.

“Last season, I achieved a life-long dream of earning my first professional Championship,” said Wells. “For 2017, I will be moving up to the premier class of American Flat Track, the AFT Twins class. I’m excited for the challenge and I look forward to moving into the class for my rookie year with the support of BriggsAuto. I can’t express how excited I am to finally make the jump to AFT Twins. That has always been my goal as a racer, so to finally be making the jump, especially with such an awesome team, feels pretty great. Also, going into the DAYTONA TT with a tuner like Johnny Goad is going to be huge. I believe with the support from this awesome and proven team, we will have a phenomenal 2017 season.”

For more than four decades, Johnny and his wife Sarah Goad have been involved in successful American Flat Track efforts. Johnny has spent more than 50 years on the circuit as a rider, tuner and engine builder.

“Champions have the ability to take adversity and turn it into a positive,” said Sarah Goad, Team Manager of the BriggsAuto.com race team. “Ryan bounced back from a tough 2015 season to win the 2016 GNC2 Championship. These characteristics, his attitude and his drive to succeed are what excite us about Ryan.”

The BriggsAuto.com team will have continued support from Martin Trucking and the Evel Knievel Museum, which is located at Historic Harley-Davidson Dealership in Topeka, Kan. Their support will assist in the successes of Wells and the entire race team during the 2017 season.

“Putting together a young champion with a legendary tuner makes for a potent combination,” said Chris Carr, Chief Competition Officer of American Flat Track. “The skills that Ryan honed coming up through the ranks show that the AFT Singles class will be a great breeding ground for up-and-coming talent next year. We’re expecting good things out of Ryan and the BriggsAuto.com effort next season.”

PUSH SmartGauge Data Logger

New-Product Debut: SmartGauge Track Data Logger and Rider-Training Tool Now Available From PUSH, Inc.

NEWPORT BEACH, CA (January 24, 2017) — Introducing the PUSH SmartGauge, a high-tech racetrack data logger and game-changing training tool for motorcycle trackday enthusiasts and club racers that seamlessly transmits pro-level telemetry and cutting-edge, 3D lap-visualization data via Bluetooth to an iPhone or iPad.

With this tangible information–instead of haphazard guesswork and sheer bravado–they can systematically build the skills and confidence essential to cutting faster lap times.

After extensive research, development and real-world track testing, the SmartGauge is available for immediate shipping and the PUSH app can be downloaded now from Apple’s iTunes store.

Housed in a rugged, aluminum case, the SmartGauge is about the size of a hockey puck and mounts like an action camera. Its integrated motion sensors and super-accurate GPS record the bike’s exact path and speed internally.

Once data is transferred from the SmartGauge, the app seamlessly weaves this info with GoogleEarth-like satellite imagery to create PUSH’s exclusive DroneView™. These clear, accurate, 3D images of the exact lines taken during each lap around a racecourse magically appear to have been filmed by a drone following overhead.

Taking the SmartGauge’s capabilities one step further, PUSH’s software app has built-in, one-touch integration for uploading data to Harry’s LapTimer, a leading track-analysis app that provides much more than lap-timing functions. It also unlocks all SmartGauge data and overlays everything on maps of more than 900 racetracks around the world.

When combined with PUSH’s track-positioning information and speed readings, this expanded sensor data shows precisely when a rider started braking, how much lean angle they induced, when they eased off the brakes, picked up the motorcycle and accelerated toward the next corner. Another feature PUSH provides is a database of reference laps that allows SmartGauge users to compare their performance data to that of leading instructors and racers who’ve ridden the same track configurations.

The unprecedented ability to use PUSH and Harry’s apps to visualize individual lap traces from tracks they rode just moments ago or those halfway around the globe helps club racers and trackday riders identify better lines and employ other strategies that put them one step ahead of the competition.

Based in Newport Beach, California, PUSH Inc. was founded by a pair of active bike, car and adventure-sports enthusiasts. Todd Berk and Craig Smith developed the SmartGauge utilizing nearly two decades of experience in automotive and electro-mechanical engineering with leading tech companies.

“We were seeking the ultimate tool to capture track performance and found current products lacking,” said Berk. “These low-tech data-logger systems required computer geeks to navigate their dated software and the smartphone-based apps just aren’t accurate. Our goal with PUSH is bringing pro-level technology to everyday enthusiasts. It has to be precise, affordable, easy to use and quickly provide valuable insight to clearly show users where improvements can be made.”

The latest addition to PUSH’s executive team is Imad Samhat, Vice President of Business Development and OEM Relations. He’s a former electronics industry executive and electrical engineer.

Conveniently, Samhat is also the CEO of Fastrack Riders Academy and Apex Club, the official motorcycle trackday provider for Auto Club Speedway, which is just 30 miles from Los Angeles. For real-world research and development, the founders have been working closely with Samhat, championship-winning professional racers, his coaching staff and students in the Fastrack Academy program, the organization’s most advanced training regimen.

Samhat said, “This is a rare and exciting opportunity to combine my passion with my academic training. We have a great management team that is capable of taking PUSH to the next level.

“In our collaboration with PUSH over the past two seasons, the SmartGauge has been an indispensable teaching tool for our Academy riders. The data it provides is accurate, quickly available and easy to use on phones. It has helped participants get faster by allowing them to see and discuss tangible data with their trainers, instead of talking about feelings or thoughts on performance. Its benefits and results speak for themselves.”

The $399 SmartGauge can be purchased through PushTheLimit.net and select distributors. For more in-depth information about the PUSH SmartGauge, please visit PushTheLimit.net. Trackday enthusiasts and racers can become part of the SmartGauge community by liking PUSH’s Facebook page and following the company on its YouTube channel and Instagram.
