Foxcreek Leather Vented Racing Motorcycle Jacket

A jacket for the rest of us.

Not everyone wants a race rep jacket - tis' true. The normal guy, including me, wants something a little subtler. Sure, battling the hot dog queue at Daytona whilst wearing a De rigueur BenBoz race wannabe jacket might ensure no-one dares cut in front of you, but in real world, looking like a race track refugee is not really the thing.

So how subtle are these jackets? Well the ladies version of this jacket arrived first and was immediately pinched by "er indoors". Yes, she who normally runs a mile when I walk in looking like Valentino Rossi (minus the handbag) actually took an instant liking to this here leather jacket.

What's not to like? The leather is both substantial and luxurious in feel. The material is listed as naked full grain leather. Naked? However sexy that sounds, it actually refers to the tanning process, and basically means that it has only been dyed and does not have a top finish. What does that mean 2Dubbers? Well, the leather is very soft and doesn't have that plastic gloss finish that most jackets have. Full grain also means that this is made from the top cut of the hide and the grain of the leather has not been sanded down or finished in any manner.

Tell us more Mr. Scientist... Basically the jacket is going to get more beautiful with age as it absorbs natural body oils/conditioners rather than having the finish crack and peel off to revealing gray splotches underneath. This jacket won't bleed either because it's drum dyed all the way through. The stitching is nylon so there'll be no complaints with rotting stitching - I've seen lesser-made jackets blow apart at the seams due to that rotting.

Even though the jacket is on the heavy side of the scale as far as thickness (1.4-1.6mm) you don't notice it because it's so soft and form fitting. That thickness will be gratefully acknowledged should you ever tip over the way we motorcyclists do from time to time.

The cut of the jacket suits both a sporty or tourer style stance. The shoulder has expansion joints to facilitate comfort and mobility whilst riding. I do hate it when I'm forced into an unnatural stance, in order to feel safe and protected. I'm pretty tall and the arms offered more than enough length for my orangutan physique (long arms - not red butt!)

The hardware is nice and beefy too - brass zippers have a nicer action that your typical (read: cheaper) gunmetal versions and it looks classic (and more expensive) too. The cuffs have a nice feature, the zipper section is V-shaped. When you zip up the cuff it pulls the leather together to form a nice snug fitting sleeve that easily slips into your gloves for maximum protection, neato.

It's around 12 million degree's in Florida at the moment and both jackets feature a cool removable mesh shell with dual vents on the front and rear of them - intake and exhaust? The vents have a very porous shell covering them and flow-through is pretty impressive. Outside of Florida this jacket is definitely a year-round one. I think I'm going to have to put mine up till the fall however. I suspect when it comes back out of retirement it'll still look and feel as good as it does today.

Finally, this jacket also has two more valuable features; firstly they're made in the good ol' US of A. And second, they have a lifetime guarantee. This guarantee covers all workmanship excluding the liner and shell materials. This primarily means stitching, snaps, and zippers. If the stitching is coming out, the zipper fails, etc then Foxcreek will replace or repair the jacket - they say they are serious about lifetime on this.

Oh, and because they are a somewhat small company they can be flexible in sizing. If you need a pinch more here or less there, they may be able to accommodate. My only beef with this jacket was the side lacing on the bottom - It was a little too retro for me, you may think differently. I know my wife likes it and she's not all bad. They do offer a snap version so you can take your choice. Speaking of choice, you can get them in black, brown or a two-tone combination of both.

If you buy one, get one for the wife or girlfriend too. It's worth a few brownie points, I speak from experience.
