Nelson Rigg
SVT-50 Messenger Bag
I decided it was time
to retire my 10-year-old Jansport backpack due to the fact that it had
a hole in it so big, I didn't need to use the zipper to get my gear out.
That's not too good when traveling down the highway at speed. So I decided
to try out Nelson Rigg's messenger bag. Now I'm not the sort of person
that likes to duck and dive through traffic to deliver letters, don't
people use E mail for that nowadays? but I liked the bag anyway.
The messenger bag,
referred to by some of my acquaintances as the "man purse",
is meant to be a soft briefcase that's easy to carry on your bike. It
has large main compartment that is 100% waterproof and big enough to carry
several file folders, note pads or even books. It's also big enough to
carry a laptop and its associated accessories, though it would be nice
if the bag had some padding for impact protection. It's kind of a pain
to get things in and out of the main compartment of the bag, but that
type of closure is needed to remain 100% waterproof. On the front side
of the bag are a couple of pockets for pens, paper clips, chewing gum
or whatever else you want to put in them. I prefer Altoids, but to each
their own.
The bag is supposed
to be worn over your shoulder, across your chest. The shoulder strap has
a padded section for comfort and is adjustable for length. There's another
strap that goes around your waist to hold the bag in place. I found that
by keeping the waist strap fairly tight it carried most of the weight
while riding keeping the weight off my shoulders. I found it to be more
comfortable and easier to get on and off while wearing a leather jacket
than my venerable backpack. Actually, with one of my jackets I used to
have to take the jacket off first then remove the backpack from the jacket.
All in all I'm happy
with it and at an MSRP of $44.95 it's a good deal too. Try to get a 100%
waterproof backpack for that. My only complaint is the lack of padding
to protect my laptop. Granted that's not what the bag was made for, but
in this day and age the laptop bag has almost replaced the briefcase.
Perhaps I've just come up with an idea for a new product? In the mean
time I'll just have to be careful what I bump it into.
