Team M4 EMGO Suzuki encountered tricky conditions at Virginia International
Raceway on Friday, the opening day of the ninth round of the 2007 AMA roadracing
season.
Morning showers were followed by near-100 degree temperatures in
the afternoon, combining with a worn surface to create low grip conditions at
VIR. Geoff May was initially concerned with his pace as it compared to past
visits to the circuit but was relieved to see that everyone was struggling to
match last year's times.
Despite his difficulties the Georgian actually
posted the fourth best lap in the Supersport session (1:28.553) aboard his
Pirelli-shod GSX-R600 and the fifth best lap in Superstock aboard his powerful
GSX-R1000 (1: 27.866).
May said, "We're struggling a little bit. We're
not used to having this low grip, but everybody is in the same boat. I'm trying
to get my head together and figure it out for the weekend. The track seems to be
a little worn. I don't know if there's been a lot of car activity or what, but
you can see it in a couple of corners."
"At first I was a little worried
looking at the lap times and then I noticed that everyone was about a second off
on the bigger bikes," he continued. "It will definitely be an interesting race
weekend. It's going to make for an exciting race for the fans. I think there
will be a lot of guys smoking tires coming off the corners. It should be a good
show."
"We were really strong here last year and we know we have a good
race set-up. We're just going to stick with that for now and see what
happens."
Colombian Martin Cardenas was just hundredths of a second off
claiming a second-row starting position for Saturday's Formula Xtreme race,
qualifying a solid ninth fastest aboard his FX-spec GSX-R600 as he continued to
learn the VIR circuit.
The former World 250 Grand Prix contender
improved in the afternoon session to earn the inside starting slot on the third
row of the grid with a time of 1:28.760.
Earlier in the day Cardenas was
17th in the Supersport practice, just a tick off his teammate, Californian
Michael Beck, who ranked 16th. Beck's fast lap of 1: 30.080 just edged that of
Cardenas' 1:30.149.
On Saturday Team M4 EMGO Suzuki will race the FX
final and qualify for Sunday's Superstock and Supersport finals
