Round 3 of the AMA Pro Motocross Championship – June 4, 2016

LAKEWOOD, Colo. – Saturday was a rollercoaster day for the Red Bull KTM Factory Racing team at Round 3 of the AMA Pro Motocross Championship in Lakewood, Colorado. Ryan Dungey finished 2nd overall with 2-4 moto scores, while teammate Marvin Musquin, bounced back from a tough Moto 1 to finish 5th place in Moto 2.

In Moto 1, Dungey got off to a decent start aboard his KTM 450 SX-F Factory Edition, where he tucked into the 3rd place position behind Jason Anderson on lap one. By lap three Dungey had made his way around Anderson for 2nd, where he went to work on catching Ken Roczen for the lead position. Dungey maintained his position for the remainder of the race, where he finished 2nd.

Musquin didn’t get off to a great start, but the Frenchman immediately began pushing hard on the opening lap. However, Musquin mistakenly went off the track and became entangled in a banner, thus losing substantial time. After remounting, Musquin would crash again, causing him to ultimately 37th in Moto 1.

In Moto 2, Dungey grabbed another good start and made his way into the lead battle on the opening lap. While making an attempt to pass into the lead, Dungey got caught in a rut and went down, sending him all the way back to 19th place heading into lap two.

Dungey quickly recollected himself and made a charge toward the front, catching his teammate Musquin in the 7th place position by lap five. From there, the Red Bull KTM Factory Racing duo pushed their way into the top five, where Dungey ultimately finished 4th and Musquin in 5th.

“The ruts are really tough in Colorado, I was just trying to focus on good lines and making them stick. In the second moto I was trying to make a pass for the lead and my front end caught a little rut on the hip jump and it kicked and sent me in the air,” Dungey said. “Trying to rebound from that, thankfully we could get up and make a charge to pass as many guys as we could and salvage 2nd overall for the day.”

Dungey’s 2-4 moto scores were good enough to capture 2nd overall for the day, where he holds 2nd place in the 450 Class Championship standings.

Despite a tough experience in Moto 1, Musquin rebounded well to finish a solid 5th place in Moto 2, his best of the season.

“The first moto didn’t go as planned so I knew I had to regroup in the second moto,” Musquin said. “I had a good start even though I started way outside. The first few laps were slow but as soon as Ryan got around me after his crash, I wanted to follow him and get good lines and good flow. I was following him just like practice and that was good for the confidence. It was my first time in the top five in the 450 Class and that’s the goal every week.”

With 37-5 moto scores, Musquin ended up with 14th overall for the day, where he now sits 8th in the 450 Class Championship standings.

The AMA Pro Motocross Championship resumes on Saturday, June 18 in Mt. Morris, Pennsylvania.
