MILWAUKEE (January 28, 2017) – It’s a flat track triple threat. The Harley-Davidson® Factory Flat Track Racing Team will unleash a three-rider squad in 2017. Former AMA Pro Grand National champions Kenny Coolbeth Jr. and Jake Johnson and young flat track star Brandon Robinson will race in the legendary Factory Team leathers.

The team was announced today during a live interview with Coolbeth, Johnson and Robinson during ABC network coverage of ESPN’s X Games Aspen.

Gunning for the checkered flag aboard the fierce Harley-Davidson XG750R competition motorcycle, the formidable trio of ace racers will chase a championship on the American Flat Track (AFT) series and fight to medal in the Harley-Davidson Flat Track Racing event at ESPN’s X Games Minneapolis. The American Flat Track racing season opens during Daytona Bike Week at the March 16 DAYTONA TT on a new circuit featuring a jump to be constructed inside Daytona International Speedway in Daytona Beach, Fla.

“This edition of the Harley Factory Team will bring unmatched savvy and experience to the track,” said Harley-Davidson Vice President and Managing Director U.S. Mike Kennedy. “With a combined 59 Grand National wins and five AMA Pro Grand National championships, this line-up of riders knows what it takes to do battle with the lead pack and will be a force aboard our new Harley-Davidson XG750R Factory Racing bikes. If you are in Daytona for Bike Week, ride to the race and see the Factory Team in action on this exciting new TT track.”

The Harley Factory Team will field a fleet of Harley XG750R bikes for Coolbeth, Johnson and Robinson. With a custom chassis purpose-built for flat track racing, the XG750R flat tracker is powered by a race-modified, liquid-cooled, fuel-injected 750cc Revolution X™ V-Twin engine originally engineered for the Harley-Davidson Street® 750, a motorcycle designed for maximum urban maneuverability with rebellious Dark Custom™ attitude. The Revolution X engine is assembled at Harley-Davidson Vehicle and Powertrain Operations in Kansas City, Missouri.

“I’m excited to be one of the riders helping to push the XG750R to the front of the field,” said Robinson. “I’m sure I’ll be battling with Kenny and Jake to see who can make history and score the first win aboard the new bike. I’ve learned a lot racing against them. Now we’re working together to bring home a championship for Harley-Davidson.”

The race-modified Revolution X engine and a racing frame for the XG750R were developed in collaboration with Vance & Hines Motorsports. The XG750R flat tracker motorcycle is not a production model. The 750cc XG Revolution X V-Twin engine is for sale through Harley-Davidson dealers today and can be modified for racing use by aspiring dealers and privateers.

Ryan Wells Ascends to AFT Twins

Ryan Wells ascends to AFT Twins with BriggsAuto.com race team for 2017 American Flat Track season

RyanWells

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Jan. 26, 2017) – Ryan Wells and the BriggsAuto.com race team have joined forces for the 2017 American Flat Track race season. The 2016 GNC2 Champion will debut the No. 94 Kawasaki Ninja 650 in the AFT Twins class at the DAYTONA TT on March 16, 2017.

GNC2 was American Flat Track’s breeding ground for up-and-coming riders and the class, now known as AFT Singles, has been re-envisioned for 2017 as a racing platform for 450cc single-cylinder motorcycles. Wells dominated the division in 2016, earning 264 points and five wins. The Albion, N.Y. native looks to carry his momentum into 2017 with a new team led by legendary tuner Johnny Goad.

“Last season, I achieved a life-long dream of earning my first professional Championship,” said Wells. “For 2017, I will be moving up to the premier class of American Flat Track, the AFT Twins class. I’m excited for the challenge and I look forward to moving into the class for my rookie year with the support of BriggsAuto. I can’t express how excited I am to finally make the jump to AFT Twins. That has always been my goal as a racer, so to finally be making the jump, especially with such an awesome team, feels pretty great. Also, going into the DAYTONA TT with a tuner like Johnny Goad is going to be huge. I believe with the support from this awesome and proven team, we will have a phenomenal 2017 season.”

For more than four decades, Johnny and his wife Sarah Goad have been involved in successful American Flat Track efforts. Johnny has spent more than 50 years on the circuit as a rider, tuner and engine builder.

“Champions have the ability to take adversity and turn it into a positive,” said Sarah Goad, Team Manager of the BriggsAuto.com race team. “Ryan bounced back from a tough 2015 season to win the 2016 GNC2 Championship. These characteristics, his attitude and his drive to succeed are what excite us about Ryan.”

The BriggsAuto.com team will have continued support from Martin Trucking and the Evel Knievel Museum, which is located at Historic Harley-Davidson Dealership in Topeka, Kan. Their support will assist in the successes of Wells and the entire race team during the 2017 season.

“Putting together a young champion with a legendary tuner makes for a potent combination,” said Chris Carr, Chief Competition Officer of American Flat Track. “The skills that Ryan honed coming up through the ranks show that the AFT Singles class will be a great breeding ground for up-and-coming talent next year. We’re expecting good things out of Ryan and the BriggsAuto.com effort next season.”

Marquez Reclaims Superprestigio Crown

Marquez reclaims Superprestigio crown; Baker takes home third

SuperprestigioPodium
SuperprestigioPodium

BARCELONA (Dec. 17, 2016) – American Flat Track star Brad Baker has been crowned the king of the Superprestigio in each of his two previous appearances, but this year Marc Marquez toppled the crown. The three-time, defending MotoGP™ World Champion took top honors in the Superfinal in front of his hometown crowd at Barcelona’s Palau Sant Jordi on Saturday night.

The pair headed into the final showdown of the evening as winners of the brackets for their respective classes – Superprestigio and Open – but they were both after bragging rights for taking home that Superfinal win and Marquez was happy to have that this year.

“Of course I’m really happy because this is the Superprestigio,” Marquez said. “Last year I was really close from the victory and this year I get it. I know the mistakes that I did last year, but this year I try to be in a different way and it was working well. But especially the pace was working really good. Toni (Elias) was pushing a lot but the pace this year was the best year, what I feel. Also, one of the reasons was my team. They are right here at the Palau. It was a really good job.”

It was a reversal of fortune for Baker, as this time around Marquez made improvements to his setup and rode off into the distance, while Baker had to play it smart to get a spot on the podium.

“Tire choice was very crucial today,” Baker said. “The surface was very abrasive and these tires are very soft, so they wear really quick. I really never road with a new tire all day long, but I just thought with the 16 laps that I was going to need a lot of rubber, a lot of tire to last at the end and it was a bad decision.”

Two laps in, Baker knew his mistake and knew that his race was over. Toni Elias was able to get past Baker and attempt to chase down his fellow Spaniard, but Marquez was in the zone. The former Moto2 World Champion and current MotoAmerica Superbike racer had to settle for second, but after a rough week struggling to find the right setup, Elias was more than happy with a runner-up result.

“We didn’t expect that. We knew that the Superprestigio (Final) was possible but not the Superfinal,” Elias said. Thanks to my team because they work really hard throughout the week, especially the last days. We made the right choices at the right time.”

Elias also had a bit of luck, as he realized last minute that his tire was toast before going into the Superfinal. But with the good will of the tire manufacturer, they reopened their truck and fitted a new tire for him.

“I was really close to losing the Superfinal because my rear tire was completely finished and I went to push for it; I need to change my tire,” Elias said. “He waited for me and finally everything was right. The Superfinal was perfect. I could pass Brad,  someone who rides that well. This is nice to end the year this way, because it’s been a nice year. Thanks to everybody in the U.S. Thanks to this team, to my family, all the fans in the stand. And tonight to continue to party!”

As for Baker, he was obviously disappointed not to keep his Superprestigio streak alive, but he’s enjoyed his time in Spain and is more motivated than ever to come back next year and take back the crown.

“Well, first off, this event, this time that I come over and spend in Spain is something that I’ll remember forever,” Baker said. “It’s been something that is very important to me and the people that I’ve met here in Spain and for the Superprestigio – it’s irreplaceable. I’ve enjoyed it and I’ve had a really good time here at the Superprestigio, but it’s like the pressure to win and to produce for Flat Track, it gets more intense every single year, everybody else gets better. But I’m just thankful to be a part of that and that Flat Track is here and the Superprestigio is getting bigger and everyone else is growing with it.”

Moto2 racer Xavier Simon was fourth. In fifth, and the next best Open class rider was Spanish flat track racer Gerard Bailo followed by another Moto2 racer, Marcel Schrotter. The 2016 RFME Copa de Flat Track Champion Ferran Cardus was shuffled back to seventh after a mid-race miscue. Five-time FIM Supermoto World Champion Thomas Chareyre’s eighth-place result completed the results for the Superfinal.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Dec. 13, 2016) – It’s that time of year… Time for the long awaited rematch between American Flat Track’s Brad Baker and MotoGP’s Marc Marquez at the fourth running of the Superprestigio at Palau Saint Jordi in Barcelona, Spain on Saturday, December 17.

Once again, FansChoice.tv will live stream the event in the U.S. this Saturday from 12:00 p.m. ET – 3:30 p.m. ET, free of charge thanks to a collaborative effort between American Flat Track and RPM-MKTG, the promoters of the Superprestigio.

Three-time MotoGP™ World Champion Marquez will once again aim to beat Baker at his own game. The 2013 Grand National Champion remains undefeated against Marquez, topping the international superstar in both Superprestigio I and III. In 2014, during the second running of the international dirt track spectacular, Baker was sidelined after a crash in practice and Marquez scored a win over three-time Grand National Champion Jared Mees. Mees was invited to take part in this year’s grudge match overseas, but unfortunately he’s still on the mend from an injury suffered in off-season testing.

A true All-Star event, the short track exhibition features an invitation-only field comprised of champions and top motorcycle talent from around the world, and a variety of disciplines. Alongside Marquez, the list includes additional road racing World Champions, including 2014 Moto3 World Champion Alex Marquez, 2010 Moto2 World Champion Toni Elias and 2011 FIM 125cc World Champion Nico Terol. Joining the group of A-list road racers for his Superprestigio debut is former World Superbike racer and fan favorite Ruben Xaus.

In addition to Baker, dirt track racing’s international contingent includes National Champions Alan Birtwistle (2016 British DTRA Champion) and Ferran Cardus (2016 RFME Copa de España de Flat Track Champion). Cardus, the inaugural champion of Spain’s national flat track series, has been training with Baker in recent months and has also been invited by American Flat Track to compete in the AFT Singles class at the 2017 season opener, the DAYTONA TT, on March 16.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Oct. 12, 2016) – AMA Pro Racing and Dunlop Motorcycle Tires are excited to announce a renewed, multi-year partnership with the recently-rebranded American Flat Track series. Dunlop will hold the exclusive category rights as Official Motorcycle Tire Supplier for the series and will extend their support into the marketing, competition and broadcast efforts over the next three years.

“Dunlop has more than proven their dedication to motorcycle sport over the years, and we are proud to expand our partnership with them,” said Michael Lock, CEO of AMA Pro Racing. “Starting in 2017, Dunlop will put more money into the paddock by substantially increase their contingency. This shows just how much they care about the paddock and how serious they are about joining us as partners as we build a bright new future for the sport.”

Starting in 2017, Dunlop will increase their per-race contingency payout to riders by nearly 300% and will pay contingency in both the AFT Twins and AFT Singles classes. At select rounds for the AFT Twins class, the tire manufacturer will begin to offer two rear tire options, giving each rider the opportunity to select their preferred compound.

The tire choices selected by each rider will be featured in an all-new pre-race “Tire Talk” segment during live broadcasts on FansChoice.tv. These editorial pieces will also explain the technology and performance characteristics of Dunlop tires through feature content and interviews with American Flat Track riders and Dunlop representatives.

“Dunlop’s commitment to motorcycle racing reaches all disciplines of the sport, and we’re especially proud to be the official tire of American Flat Track,” said Mike Buckley, Dunlop Motorcycle’s Vice President of Sales and Marketing. “Flat Track racing is a uniquely American sport, and it aligns perfectly with Dunlop’s position as the only brand developing and manufacturing motorcycle tires in America—including the DT3 flat track tire. We applaud AMA Pro’s dedication to growing the sport of Flat Track racing, and we’re thrilled to extend our official tire relationship with the series for three more years.”

As a thank you to the fans, Dunlop will give back through social media giveaways awarding lucky winners with Dunlop Tire Certificates. These giveaways will allow fans to experience the true #RideDunlop experience, equipping them with the same rubber that the super stars of American Flat Track compete on every weekend.

The Dunlop Fan Walk will once again take place at every round in 2017, and fans will now know where to enter the paddock by looking for the new Dunlop Arch. Once inside the paddock, fans will have the chance to meet the top dirt-track motorcycle riders in the world, as well as the tire specialists who engineer the latest tire technology driving every rider on the circuit.

AMA Pro Racing Announces Rebrand of American Flat Track Series

AMA Pro Racing announces rebrand of American Flat Track series

AMAFlatTrack

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Sept. 25, 2016) – AMA Pro Racing has proudly announced the official rebranding of the all-new American Flat Track (AFT) series – formerly known as AMA Pro Flat Track. The rebranding of the series coincides with the dawn of a new era for America’s favorite motorcycle sport, which includes a restructured class system as well as a re-envisioning of the event format. While holding true to the legacy of a sport rich in history, the modifications are designed to provide a more understandable and exciting format for the modern fans and make the series more accessible to new fans.

“We are extremely excited about the rebranding of the series,” said Michael Lock, CEO of AMA Pro Racing. “The rejuvenation of the sport will bring a new level of excitement to racers and fans. Everyone will be able to easily understand what’s happening on the track and will be able to enjoy all of the action from the moment they arrive to when they head home. It’s a very exciting time for the sport of professional Flat Track racing.”

The restructured class system consists of the AFT Twins class, the premier class where the best Flat Track riders in the world battle for top honors on fire-breathing Twins, and the AFT Singles class, which will host dirt track racing’s stars of tomorrow.

The reclassification of the new series is categorized in an easily comprehensible format:

The AFT Twins class will consist of twin-cylinder motorcycles (650 – 999cc), which contain the latest in motorsport technology and will be piloted by the fastest athletes on the dirt.
In the AFT Singles class, the up-and-coming riders will command the tracks on 450cc single-cylinder motorcycles as they compete for their chance to make it to the prestigious AFT Twins ranks.

There are also changes to event format which promise an action-packed program of racing. The traditional format will move to a tournament style format, where the fastest 48 riders from timed qualifying advance to the heats. From there, the race program will consist of four six-lap Heats with nine of the 12 riders transferring to one of the two Semis. What was traditionally a last chance effort to make the Main, the new Semi format is a knockout round where 18 riders duke it out for the nine spots that transfer them to the 18-rider Main. The Main events themselves see little changes, with the premiere AFT Twins class keeping its traditional 25-lap Main and the support AFT Singles class sees a slight increase from 12 to 15 laps.

Adding to the excitement in 2017, the American Flat Track series will also be the battleground for one of the oldest rivalries in motorcycle racing – Harley-Davidson and Indian Motorcycle. The American Flat Track series in its entirety will continue its growth by introducing new global manufacturers to the sport and will see elevated support from current and new partners.

In keeping with the goals to streamline and modernize the series, AMA Pro Racing has worked diligently with the Advisory Group to rewrite and enhance the rulebook for the 2017 season. The driving force behind the updated rulebook is to focus on the safety and performance of the overall racing experience. The list of partners and the 2017 rulebook will be available at later dates.

Earlier in the 2016 season, AMA Pro Racing announced the formation of subsidiary company AFT Events and the brand-new apparel line American Flat Tracker. These companies have served as a springboard for the launch of the American Flat Track series and will continue to innovate in new ways to elevate the level of the entire event experience for fans, teams and the overall sport of professional Flat Track.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Sept. 26, 2016) – An exciting change is happening to one of Daytona International Speedway’s (DIS) most popular Bike Week events. Daytona International Speedway is proud to announce that American Flat Track will debut its 2017 season inside the “World Center of Racing” on a one-of-a-kind .6-mile TT course. The DAYTONA TT, scheduled on the evening of Thursday, March 16, will feature powerful, twin-cylinder motorcycles in the AFT Twins class, while spirited single-cylinder machines will battle it out in AFT Singles. With a racing schedule that includes the DAYTONA Supercross By Honda, Ricky Carmichael Amateur Supercross, the all-new DAYTONA TT and the famed DAYTONA 200, DIS will play host to the ultimate festival of motorcycle racing in 2017.

American Flat Track has been re-envisioned and the DAYTONA TT marks the dawning of a new era for America’s most historic form of motorcycle racing. The championship features the broadest spectrum of brands competing in any form of motorcycle sport, and will serve as a battleground for the great American war between Harley-Davidson and Indian Motorcycles in 2017. The big factories will be competing head-to-head on the race track for the first time since the 1950s, and the battle of the brands will begin at Daytona.

“Daytona is the spiritual home of motorcycle racing and we are delighted to be bringing the intensity of Flat Track racing and the spectacle of a TT to complete the show,” said Michael Lock, CEO of AMA Pro Racing. “2017 marks the start of a new golden era for our sport and we are excited for our legions of fans.”

Many flat track races are held on dirt ovals, but the TT moniker indicates turns in both directions and a jump have been incorporated into track design for the DAYTONA TT. To showcase the high speed and intensity of the sport, the track design will feature a fast, sweeping left hand turn alongside the frontstretch of the famed circuit. The track’s unique characteristics are perfectly suited for the fast and furious nature of America’s longest running motorcycle racing championship.

“Staging the DAYTONA TT inside the motorsports stadium will expose a new group of guests to the many amenities available following the recently completed $400 million frontstretch renovation project,” DIS Track President Chip Wile said. “It’s also going to be a great opportunity for racers in American Flat Track to compete inside the Speedway battling for a coveted Daytona trophy as part of Bike Week.”

Tickets to the DAYTONA TT will go on sale Tuesday, Sept. 27 at 9 a.m. and can be purchased at www.daytonainternationalspeedway.com or by calling 1-800-PITSHOP. Reserved seating in the newly-renovated grandstands will start at $35 and general admission tickets will be available for $25. Kids 12 and under are free in general admission areas and just $10 in reserved seats.
