Hayden and Elias Earn Podium Finishes at Road America

Chino, CA (June 7, 2016) – Wisconsin’s scenic rolling hills hosted rounds nine and ten of the MotoAmerica Superbike Championship Sunday and Yoshimura Suzuki Factory Racing’s Roger Hayden and Toni Elias came away from Elkhart Lake, each having earned podium finishes aboard their Yoshimura Suzuki GSX-R1000 Superbikes.

Hayden finished second in Sunday’s race one at the four-mile Road America course and it was Elias’ turn to score the second spot in race two. It marked the sixth podium result of the year for both Hayden and Elias.

After the strong weekend Hayden and Elias continue to be in the championship hunt, ranked third and fourth in the series standings respectively, with Hayden just 27 points out of the series lead and Elias five points behind his teammate.

Although Elias was visiting Road America for the first time, he proved a quick study and powered his Yoshimura Suzuki GSX-R1000 around the track in a time of 2:32.514 to qualify second, putting him on the front row. Hayden headed up the second row, qualifying fourth with a time of 2:33.183.

In Sunday’s race one it became a three-rider battle for victory with Hayden in the mix. Hayden was right there at the finish in second, missing the win by just 4-10ths of a second. Elias finished a distant fourth, having experienced a traction issue.

Race two was also a riveting finish with four riders going at it to the end, including Elias and Hayden. Elias tried to make a move for the lead on the final lap, but couldn’t quite make it stick and instead finished second by a scant 6-10ths of a second. Hayden and his GSX-R were also right there with the lead group in a close fourth.

“Both races went really good,” Hayden said. “I struggled a little bit early in the weekend, but the team gave me a great bike for the races. I was up there battling for the win in both and I’m happy with that, but a little disappointed to get second and fourth. It was a fun race. I can’t remember the last time we had four riders battling for a Superbike win. I’m looking forward to Barber.”

For Elias it was another solid weekend and one which saw him come so close to another MotoAmerica victory.

“I had a traction problem in the first race, but in the second everything was normal and I could push,” Elias explained. “At first they were faster than me, but after some laps I improved and caught the leaders and fought for the last five laps. I knew my best opportunity to take the lead was in turn five. I decided to try at the corner, but I entered too fast and was passed again. I fought in the final meters and took second. It was good for the points. We are alive in the championship and I think we are working really well.”

Next up for the Yoshimura Suzuki team is Barber Motorsports Park this coming weekend, June 10-12 in Birmingham, AL. The races will be televised on beIN SPORTS.

Toni Elias to Complete MotoAmerica Season with Yoshimura Suzuki

Jake Lewis to Ride M4 Suzuki GSX-R1000

Chino, CA (April 29, 2016) – Yoshimura Suzuki Factory Racing has signed Toni Elias to join the team for the remainder of the 2016 season. The former Moto2 World Champion created a sensation when he won his first three MotoAmerica AMA Superbike races on a Yoshimura Suzuki GSX-R1000 as a fill in rider for the injured Jake Lewis.

With Elias joining the team Jake Lewis will move to Team Hammer on an M4 Suzuki GSX-R1000 in the Superstock 1000 class. Lewis is expected to return to competition at the Virginia International Raceway (VIR) round. The transition became possible when Team Hammer rider/owner Chris Ulrich decided to retire from racing effective immediately. Suzuki recognized the opportunity for Lewis and began a discussion with the team.

“Suzuki Motor of America is pleased to have the resources available and the support of our M4 and Yoshimura Suzuki teams to take full advantage of this opportunity,” said Pat Alexander, Suzuki Road Race Manager. “We have a tremendous heritage with the most championships on the GSX-R and these changes will give us a great opportunity to continue achieving strong results in both the MotoAmerica Superstock and Superbike Classes.”

“We’re happy to have Toni officially join the team for the rest of the season,” added Don Sakakura, Yoshimura Suzuki Vice President. “Toni has provided a great boost and wants to stay. The logistics were made easier for everyone when we learned Team Hammer had an opening. Having Jake available to step in and provide them a proven rider is a win-win situation for both teams. Jake will continue his development as a GSX-R1000 rider with Suzuki with one of the most established teams in the paddock.”

For Elias word that he would stay with Yoshimura Suzuki for the 2016 season was welcome news.

“I’m very happy for the opportunity to continue racing with Yoshimura Suzuki,” Elias said. “I’ve gotten to be good friends with everyone on the team and we work together very well. I’m also happy for Jake to be able to continue racing with Suzuki on the Team Hammer Suzuki. Jake was so kind to help me in any way he could as I filled in for him. I look forward to seeing him back on the track.”

After the first four races of the MotoAmerica Superbike season Yoshimura Suzuki riders Roger Hayden and Elias are first and second in the point standings. Elias made one of the most impressive debuts in AMA Superbike history when he opened his MotoAmerica career with a sweep of the two races at the Circuit of the Americas earlier this month. He followed that up with another victory in race one at Road Atlanta.

The 2016 MotoAmerica Championship is at New Jersey Motorsports Park this weekend, April 29th through May 1st in Millville, New Jersey, for the first of two visits this season to the track. The races will be televised on beIN SPORTS.

A Pair of Podiums Earns Roger Hayden Series Lead at Suzuki Sponsored Event

Chino, CA (April 18, 2016) – It was another impressive weekend for Yoshimura Suzuki teammates Roger Hayden and Toni Elias in the MotoAmerica Suzuki Superbike Shootout of Georgia at Road Atlanta in Braselton, GA. Elias continued one of the best debuts in the history of AMA Superbike racing by winning his third-consecutive series race by scoring victory in Road Atlanta’s race one on the Yoshimura Suzuki GSX-R1000 Superbike. And the Spanish former Moto2 World Champion did it this weekend on a track he’d never seen before. The magical start to Elias’ 2016 finally came to earth when he crashed out of race two while chasing down the leaders.

Roger Hayden had a solid outing at Road Atlanta, not only scoring two podiums aboard his Yoshimura Suzuki, with a close second in race one and third in race two, his strong and steady finishes in the first two stops of 2016 MotoAmerica Superbike season have earned him the series lead by a single point over Elias (76-75).

Remarkably Elias qualified second in Superpole 2, earning a front row start. It was the fact that it was his first visit to the very technical Road Atlanta, which made his front-row start so noteworthy. Hayden headed up row two after qualifying fourth.

It was an electrifying race with four riders battling for the lead. Leading on the 13th lap, teammates Cameron Beaubier and Josh Hayes collided and the pair tumbled off into the gravel on the exit of turn 10B. Hayden took over at the point, but Elias was right there with him and with a few laps to go the former World Champion took over and held on to win by .343 of a second.

“I push and where I want to pass Roger every lap was yellow flags, yellow flags, yellow flags,” Elias said. “I did my best and he was there all the time. We got lucky because the leaders crashed out and I’m sorry because they had good rhythm.”
In the afternoon race Hayden shadowed Beaubier and Hayes in third most of the way and that’s where he finished. Elias ran off the track in the early going and was actually reeling the leaders back in when a little past halfway he crashed out of fourth place in turn six. He was unhurt in the fall.
Hayden was happy with taking over the championship lead, but obviously still eager to earn his first win after being in the hunt in every race so far this season.

“Obviously I can’t be too disappointed with two podiums and leaving here with the points lead,” Hayden explained. “It was a good comeback for me at Road Atlanta after the disastrous weekend I had here last year. So overall I leave here feeling good going into New Jersey, but I’m really focused on getting some wins. The points lead is nice, but really doesn’t mean a whole lot this early in the championship. We’ve been there knocking on the door and I’d say I’m more than ready to breakthrough to get a victory.”

Team rider Jake Lewis was on hand for Road Atlanta to meet fans and sign autographs. He continues to rehab from pre-season training injuries.
In less than two weeks’ time the 2016 MotoAmerica Championship moves to New Jersey Motorsports Park on April 29th through May 1st in Millville, New Jersey, for the first of two visits this season to the track. The races will be televised on beIN SPORTS.

Elias and Hayden Finish First and Second in Both Races at COTA

Chino, CA (April 11, 2016) – Former Moto2 World Champion Toni Elias made a stunning MotoAmerica Superbike debut with Yoshimura Suzuki Factory Racing, sweeping both legs of the season-opening doubleheader at Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas. Teammate Roger Hayden finished second in both rounds, giving Yoshimura Suzuki one of the most memorable opening weekends in team history.

The combined MotoGP/MotoAmerica event drew a three-day total of 131,881 spectators.

Elias, who is serving as a replacement rider for the injured Jake Lewis, won the Saturday’s MotoAmerica Superbike after the team made adjustments on the Yoshimura Suzuki GSX-R1000 during a red flag. The changes made all the difference in the world and Elias came out flying on the restart and at the checkered flag was 1.714 seconds ahead of Hayden.

Elias was even stronger in race two on Sunday. After battling with Hayden, Elias managed to pull out a gap late in the race, this time sprinting ahead to a 4.063-second margin of victory over Hayden to complete the sweep of the COTA weekend, giving Yoshimura Suzuki a 1-2 in both legs.

When asked in the press conference Sunday afternoon if he felt like the king after winning both races, Elias replied, “I’m not the King, just winning some races. I’m happy and I’m satisfied. At the beginning of the race, I was a little bit worried. I didn’t have a great, great feeling, but we start, I try to stay behind Roger (Hayden) and Cameron (Beaubier). Finally, I found myself again and try to go away but was impossible. Roger was there all the time.

“I want Jake (Lewis) to come back and this is his bike, but since we have started so well, I hope that somehow Yoshimura Suzuki will be able to have three bikes for the team and I can stay on and fight for the championship.”

For Hayden Saturday’s race one was especially heartbreaking, since he had a two-second-plus lead when the red flag came out due to oil on the track.

“I was running really good in race one,” Hayden explained. “It was a bummer for sure when the red flag came out, since I had a pretty big lead. That’s the way it goes sometimes. You have red flags and it’s the same for everybody. On the restart I didn’t feel as good and got second.

“On Sunday’s race I got up front and pretty much battled with Toni, until the last couple of laps I started struggling a lot with the rear grip. He set an incredible pace. I’m happy to start the year this strong. I know it’s only the first race, but I’m really happy with where we’re at as a team. I can’t be happier for Yoshimura Suzuki to sweep the weekend with a first and second. It shows you how hard they’ve been working.”

Earlier in the weekend Hayden was impressive in scoring the pole in qualifying on his powerful Yoshimura Suzuki GSX-R1000. Hayden’s 2:09.151 set a new Superbike lap record at COTA, eclipsing the mark of 2:09.653 set by 2015 MotoAmerica Superbike Champion Cameron Beaubier in qualifying for last year’s race.

Elias leads the series with 50 points to Hayden’s 40.

The 2016 MotoAmerica Championship now moves to Road Atlanta next weekend for the MotoAmerica Suzuki Superbike Shootout of Georgia on April 15-17. The races will be televised on beIN SPORTS.
